The University of Cape Town (UCT) has a valued tradition of the arts and has over the many decades of their existence, produced work of national importance, significant within the continent and, increasingly, of global interest. The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA), made possible thanks to a multi-million rand grant from arts patron Sir Donald Gordon, encompasses seven units at UCT; the South African College of Music – incorporating the Kirby Collection, the School of Dance, the Department of Drama, the Centre for Film and Media Studies, the Baxter Theatre Centre, the Centre for Creative Writing and the Michaelis School of Fine Art – incorporating the Centre for Curating the Archive and the Katrine Harries Print Cabinet. Founded in December 2008 GIPCA is enabling artists from various departments to work imaginatively together, to develop interdisciplinary student and staff productions to the best of international standards and reach a wider audience.
