02. Who are we?

On Monday 12 May, International Nurses Day, six nurses will be officially announced as the winners of the 2014 Florence Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing. They have been chosen from a total of 2, 030 nominations received from 335 hospitals around the country.
This is the fourth year the awards have been held in South Africa, having being launched by specialist skincare brand Bio-Oil in 2011 to pay tribute to the unsung heroes of South African healthcare. The winners will each be awarded a Florence Nightingale trophy and cash prize of R6, 000 sponsored by Bio-Oil. The nominations came from the winners’ nursing peers and their hospital colleagues.
The winning nurses are:
- Agnes Mahlangu, Life Robinson Private Hospital, Randfontein, Gauteng
- Catherine Collins, Wellington Community Healthcare Centre, Western Cape
- Cynthea Mokgosi, Universitas Private Hospital, Bloemfontein, Free State
- Duduzile Ndlovu, Thuthuzela Care Centre, Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, KwaZulu-Natal
- Marian Grobbelaar, Netcare Linmed Hospital, Benoni, Gauteng
- Vimla Pillay, Life St James Hospital, East London, Eastern Cape
“Florence Nightingale’s compassion, sensitivity and belief in quality care for all, changed the way the world viewed nursing. With the Florence Nightingale Awards we honour the nurses who share these qualities,” said Suzette Botha, Bio-Oil spokesperson, herself a qualified nurse, familiar with the pressures of working in a busy hospital.
In addition to the nurses’ prizes, Bio-Oil has pledged R10 per nomination to the hospital in each region with the most nominations. This money is to be used towards improving nurses’ facilities. Almost R19, 000 will be shared amongst six hospitals across the regions.
The six winners of the Florence Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing will be profiled on the Bio-Oil Facebook page www.facebook.com/BioOilSA. People are also invited to share their stories of nurses who have touched their lives on the Facebook page, with a chance to win product prizes from Bio-Oil.
